The Macy’s 4th of July fireworks show is scheduled to begin around 9:20 p.m. and will last for about 30 minutes. The fireworks will be set off from four barges in the East River between 23rd and 40th street.

Given the current heatwave, the coolest place to watch the fireworks this year may be on TV (coverage starts on NBC at 8pm). However, if you want to get out and see the fireworks in person, but you don’t want to spend money on a VIP experience, there are several good and free places to watch the fireworks. ¬†While any unobstructed view of the East River should do, the public viewing areas identified below are guaranteed to offer a great view of the show:

Manhattan Viewing Locations

  • 42nd Street
  • 34th Street
  • 23rd Street
  • Houston Street

Queens Viewing Locations

  • Gantry Plaza State Park
  • Hunter’s Point

Brooklyn Viewing Locations

  • Transmitter Park
  • Bushwick Inlet Park
  • East River State Park
  • Grand Ferry Park
  • Domino Park
  • Brooklyn Bridge Park
  • Brooklyn Heights Promenade

Enjoy the fireworks, wherever that may be. And Happy 4th of July!
