This Tuesday (July 10th) is National Piña Colada Day! It is arguably my favorite national holiday surrounding a frozen cocktail. Even if you are not lucky enough to be relaxing oceanside or poolside, you can still enjoy a delicious and authentic piña colada and other tropical frozen cocktails in our very own New York City (unless nitro cold brew is more your summertime style). Here are some places you can visit on National Piña Colada Day and beat that oppressive summer heat:
This hipster Brooklyn establishment offers serious tropical vibes right in the heart of Crown Heights. The bartenders, often dressed in their finest Tommy Bahama-inspired shirts, serve up delicious tropical drinks. I love the frozen Painkiller (pictured below – $10), which offers a perfect combination of creamy and fruity. Check out the happy hour oysters too.
Crown Heights – 722 Nostrand Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11216
Otto’s Shrunken Head
Otto’s Shrunken Head is a great dive bar on the East side. It serves up all sorts of tiki and frozen drinks, such as the Coco Bango or a classic colada or daquiri ($14) in fun mugs. Otto’s also frequently features live music and comedy shows.
Alphabet City – 538 E 14th St, New York, NY 10009
Nestled on the Clinton Hill/Bed-Stuy border, The Holler is a great neighborhood bar. The bartenders serve up slushy daiquiris ($8), among other cocktails. The Holler offers a cool, old school vibe, with a jukebox and pinball machine. And bonus, Monday night is drag bingo!
Clinton Hill/Bed-Stuy – 348 Franklin Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11238
If you are looking for an authentic piña colada in an atmosphere reminiscent of 1940’s Havana, BlackTail is your place! Owned by the same people who brought you Dead Rabbit serves up delicious, handcrafted, award-winning Cuban-Amerca cocktails, including a variety of original sours, highballs, classics, and punches (pictured below – all $18).
Battery Park City – 22 Battery Pl, Fl 2 Pier A, New York, NY 10004
Piña coladas all day, everyday here. This eclectic, cozy Greenpoint bar offers a backyard patio and serves up some of the best frozen piña coladas ($6) around, as well as other great cocktails, all on the cheaper side. Broken Land is a great summertime bar with friendly service.
Greenpoint – 105 Franklin St, Brooklyn, NY 11222
This Gowanus tiki bar has a fun, low-key atmosphere. The Zombie Hut features outdoor seating and has board games available to play while you sip on your tiki drinks. Pro tip: try the frozen Zombie Drink ($11).
Gowanus – 273 Smith St, Brooklyn, NY 11231
Distilled is a great happy hour (and dinner) spot right in TriBeCa. Their bar menu features their “Signature Slushies” ($8 during happy hour) which are served right out of slushy machines. I personally dig the Black Barrel Colada (pictured below) and the Spiked Pink Lemonade. Also, Distilled’s free popcorn with their proprietary magic dust is to die for.
TriBeCa – 211 West Broadway, New York, NY 10013
This Caribbean eatery in Crown Heights serves up delicious frozen cocktails alongside yummy authentic Caribbean dishes. The frozen dark and stormy (“Dark N Slushie” – $6) is one of the most popular drink menu items.
Crown Heights – 788 Franklin Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11238
This is a brand new tiki lounge at the Pod Hotel 42 in Midtown. They offer a variety of frozen and tiki drinks in the swanky atmosphere, as well as scenic city views. Try the frozen piña colada or Fiddler’s Green, or one of the shareable, Insta-friendly bowls.
Midtown West – 400 W 42nd St, New York, NY 10036
If you find yourself trekking out to Rockaway Beach one summer day, Connolly’s Bar is a must. It is conveniently located just a block away from the boardwalk. Grab a piña colada in a styrofoam cup (a buck extra for a floater) at this divey dark wood bar and soak in the beach vibes.
Rockaway Beach, Queens – 155 Beach 95th St, Rockaway Beach, NY 11693
